Do you believe in second chances? I do.

The road to my second chance.

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in September 2019 and on the 15th October, I had my bladder and the cancer removed. That was 20 months ago and the beginning of my second chance. Although I was slow in accepting the ‘second chance challenge,’ I’ve now grabbed it with two hand and I’m moving forward. Smoking is finished, sensible eating is resulting in weight loss and no mater where I am, I walk for at least an hour a day.

For 2 weeks, I’m visiting friends on the Sunshine Coast and at Bribie Island. It’s a great chance to catch up, explore new walks and also to have new adventures. As a writer, I’m always looking for new experiences to build into my stories.

Walking in Twin Waters.

The Sunshine Coast, like the Gold Coast is a haven for retirees. Winter is mild, days are usually sunny, and councils have created great walks for both the able and less-able walker. At Twin Waters, each morning I ventured out to explore neighborhood walks. There were many to choose from and the hour flew past. I usually ended my walk at the Cock and Hen for my first morning coffee. Mmmm.

Walking at Currimundi Lakes.

The coastal pathways around Currimundi Lakes was another relaxing walk. Bush turkeys are protected and scratched around, not at all bothered by walkers. Native flora was abundant and grew in the sandy soil right down to the water’s edge.

With walks like this it was easy to clock up 10,000 steps a day.

And a day on the water.

Whilst staying with my friends, Nola and Geoff, we had a day out on the Noosa Ferry going from Tewantin to Noosa Heads and back again. The captain of the ferry had a great sense of humor and was knowledgeable about the local area. The 45 minutes flew past, before we were left to enjoy a couple of hours shopping and lunching in Hastings Street, before the return trip. This was one of many highlights over the past week. The below photos are a sample of places passed and visited.

So that was my week, making the most of adventures in Australia. There was also some writing, but not enough. Next week will be better.

I hope you’re all getting out there and discovering new walks. The best is yet to come.

  1. I do believe in second chances. They often arrive after a reckoning that rocks us to our core. We’re allowed a reset that can change everything if we take the challenge. You’ve embraced yours, Steve. Hip hip hooray!!! The best years of my life began at 62, nine years ago. I didn’t dream of covid, but what a world-changing and life-altering experience it is to be living through this time. Thank you for sharing your walks and a bit of your inner journey. You are, as always, inspirational.

    1. Thanks Sherry. I’m making the best of my time here, but now it is time to focus on writing again. I miss you. Stay safe. Steve

  2. Steve, you are turly an inspiration…making lemonade out of lemons… as we say…and also as we say, sounds like there are many silver linings being realized by you.
